In addition to its role as an access system, RFID technology can be used for many more purposes. Consider, for example, theft prevention, registration of sporting events, wireless payments, goods registration and much more.

What is the difference between an RFID and NFC droplet?

RFID is the abbreviation for Radio Frequency IDentification. It is a technology for storing and reading information from a distance. RFID works based on radio waves. As soon as the RFID droplet comes close to a reader’s signal, the chip is read and activated.

In addition, you will often hear the term NFC drop in the same context. NFC is the abbreviation of Near Field Communication. There are a number of important differences between RFID and NFC:

  • While RFID chips can be scanned up to 8 meters away, with an NFC drop this is only up to 10 centimeters.
  • With RFID there is one-way traffic of data (tag > reader), with NFC this is two-way traffic (reader <> tag). NFC is therefore a more complex technology, which also makes operations possible, instead of just reading information from the tag.
  • RFID is mainly used for access control, inventory management and tracking visitors, for example. NFC drops are mainly used for the secure transfer of data, such as contactless payments.
